Qatar Airways named ‘World’s Best Airline’

Airline review site Skytrax has named the best airlines of the year – based on surveys of passengers – at the Paris Air Show.
Qatar Airways beat Singapore Airlines to first place in the 2011 rankings, rising from third place, while Asiana dropped from the top of the table to take third place.
Cathay Pacific won fourth place in the overall rankings, while Thai Airways took fifth and Etihad took sixth at the awards, which were announced June 22.

The list of the top ten airlines in the world was notable for its lack of names from Europe and the Americas — four winners hailed from Asia, four from the Middle East/Africa and two from Oceania.
AirAsia was voted the world’s best low-cost airline, while China Southern was voted the most-improved airline.
Its competitor, Hainan Airlines, took best Chinese airline only months after joining the exclusive club of the world’s five-star airlines earlier this year.
For comfort at the airport, British Airways and Qatar Airways took prizes for business and first class respectively, although for comfort in the sky flyers may want to stick with Asiana Airlines, the recipient of the best cabin staff award.
Best in-flight entertainment went to Emirates for its ICE inflight entertainment system.
The awards were based on votes from 18.8 million airline customers from 100 different countries.

3. Asiana Airlines
4. Cathay Pacific

Would you pay $100,000 for a razor?

Zafirro has launched the world’s most expensive razor, made from iridium and consisting of sapphire blades.
The razors, made from iridium, also have pure platinum screws in addition to sapphire blades, and went on sale this week for a cost of $100,000 per piece.
Iridium is derived from meteorites, and is mainly used by the aerospace industry for components such as rocket engines, where durability is extremely important.

The sapphire is sharpened using ionised particles to create an edge, which is less than 100 atoms in width and 5000 times smaller than the width of a hair.
“Our goal in founding Zafirro was to take a quantum leap forward in razor technology, to build the sharpest blade ever made and make it last forever,”commented Hayden Hamilton, Zafirro CEO.
Available in a limited run of 99 razors, the Zaffiro Iridium was developed by Portland, Oregon-based Bright Light Ventures.

The new BMW M5

BMW has officially unveiled its new M5, the fifth generation of its popular performance sports saloon.
Sporting a newly-developed high-performance M-series engine, the M5 has been eagerly awaited since a pre-production model appeared earlier this year.
The high-revving 4.4-liter engine has “typical M car thrust,” says BMW, with a power rating of 412kW (552hp) from the twin-turbo V8 engine.

It will manage 0-100km/h in 4.4 seconds and 0-200km/h in 13 seconds, with an electronically-limited top speed of 305km/h on the high end M Driver’s Package, using a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Despite the speed, the powerful, high revving saloon manages some respectable consumption figures — 9.9 liters/100km, some 30 percent less than the previous generation thanks to efficient technology including auto start-stop and brake energy regeneration.

The chassis has also been optimised for performance, with variables altered using two new M Drive buttons on the steering wheel, which provide easy access to presets for functions such as the M Servotronic (steering) responses, Drivelogic shift program, DSC (stability control) mode, Dynamic Damper Control and information in the head-up display.
Although car blog Jalopnik points out that the M5 packs slightly less power than the Cadillac CTS-V, the M5 has generally been well received, with a fairly positive reception from both Autocar and Autoblog.
The German automaker will be hoping the reaction from fans at the official launch at next week’s M Festival (June 23-26) in Germany, will be just as good.
